"The Trooper" is a song by the English heavy metallic band Iron Maiden. It was released as the second single on 20 June 1983 from the ring'southward fourth studio album, Piece of Mind (1983). It was one of simply a few songs to become much radio airplay in the Usa, thus peaking at No. 28 on the US Mainstream Stone charts.[1] It also accomplished success in the United Kingdom, peaking at No. 12 in the UK Singles Charts equally well as gaining a much better reception than the band's previous single, "Flight of Icarus".[two]

A live version of the song, from Death on the Road, was issued in 2005.

Written by bassist and founding-fellow member Steve Harris, the song is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the Crimean State of war,[two] and inspired by Lord Tennyson'due south 1854 poem of the same name.[3] The track has been the discipline of much praise since its release, with AllMusic describing it every bit "an all-time genre classic that boasts guitarists [Dave Murray] and [Adrian Smith's] almost memorable harmonized lead riff, plus that trademark galloping rhythm,"[4] while Mick Wall comments that it is the vocal "which virtually Maiden fans from those days still recall commencement when you mention the Slice of Listen album."[5] Despite the popularity of the song, it was the single'south B-Side, a cover of Jethro Tull'due south "Cross-Eyed Mary", which managed to gain a substantial amount of airplay on US radio,[six] condign ane of the band's few tracks, along with previous unmarried "Flying of Icarus",[5] to exercise so.

Iron Maiden created a beer chosen "Trooper", named after the song.[29]

Northern Republic of ireland [edit]

During the course of the Troubles in Northern Republic of ireland the paradigm of Eddie, as he appears on the sleeve of "The Trooper", became an unofficial mascot of the Ulster Liberty Fighters loyalist paramilitary group and was the main effigy on a number of the group'southward murals.
